Dripcup

A locally produced, self watering system for moss poles.

Client: Highland Moss

Services: Product Design, Design for Manufacture, in-house digital fabrication, prototyping

Impact: 540 produced to date

Brief: Moss poles provide the perfect environment for climbing or vining plants, simulating their natural habitat. Keeping a moss pole constantly moist has been a challenge and Highland Moss were looking for a solution that was easy to use, worked flawlessly, added value to their live sphagnum moss poles and could be produced sustainably and in small batch production

Design Requirements:

Simple. The plants and moss should be the focus

300ml volume. reduce watering down to a weekly task.

Slow feed. Ensure water is absorbed by the moss and doesn’t simply run over the top of the moss.

Low volume production. Small batch production methods only.

Iterative Prototyping

Function before form. Early prototyping focused entirely on solving the slow-feed problem - getting water to absorb consistently into the moss rather than running straight over it. Each iteration was tested with Highland Moss, with findings fed directly back into the next version. Only once the mechanism was proven did the focus shift to resolving the aesthetics: a product that would sit in a customer's home needed to feel considered and premium, reflecting the Highland Moss brand positively every time someone walked past it.

Prototypes were produced in-house using digital fabrication, keeping the iteration cycle tight and the cost of learning low.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"This product is fantastic! No matter what I did I just couldn’t keep my moss pole damp and it was feeling like a bit of a battle, spraying, and full soaking as it kept drying out. This is effortless with complete coverage of all of the moss. Perfect fit on the pole and not obtrusive to just leave on when not in use. Thank you!"
